Promoting Your Live Videos

When creating live videos on a regular basis, everyone wants to see one main result: an increase in audience. Videos that receive the same amount of viewers each week (or, worse yet, a drop in viewers) can be disappointing. Everyone loves to see their number of total viewers creeping higher and higher with each consecutive broadcast.

While an increased audience can happen organically, self-promotion increases your total number of viewers exponentially. There are many ways to promote your live videos both while live and after the broadcast ends. Take a look at the strategies below to put a positive increase on your viewership graph.

Promotion While Live

Social Media Promotion

Anytime you go live to any platform, you need to share the news on all of your social media accounts. You have a separate audience on each platform (even if some of the same individuals follow you on multiple platforms), so your job is to get them all to the same place to watch your live broadcasts.

The easiest way to do this is with a Hootsuite account. Their free accounts allow you to connect up to three social media accounts, while their paid accounts allow for unlimited connections. Prior to going live, type a message in Hootsuite along the following lines:

“Hey! I’m currently LIVE on [platform you are streaming to] to discuss [main 2-3 topics]. Check it out here:”

Select the social media accounts that you wish to send this message to, and wait. Once you go live, grab your stream’s link, and post it into the Hootsuite message like so:

“Hey! I’m currently LIVE on [platform you are streaming to] to discuss [main 2-3 topics]. Check it out here: [link].”

Now, post the message via Hootsuite. The message will appear on all connected social media accounts, which will create an influx of additional viewers.

Verbal Call-To-Actions

Live video gives you a unique opportunity to connect and communicate with your audience. As such, tell them exactly what you want them to do.

Live streamers commonly say, “…and share this video onto your own Timeline or with a friend.” This is another way to increase your audience base. Every additional place where your video appears is another chance for someone else to see it. This also works after the broadcast is over, as the video link will still direct viewers to an on-demand version of your broadcast.

Ask viewers to share your video at least two or three times per broadcast:

  • After your introduction of your team and the stream.
  • In the middle of the broadcast during a transition.
  • At the end of the broadcast before you say, “Goodbye”.

The repetition drills the concept into viewers’ minds and increases the odds of them sharing your production with their own following and friends.

Visual Call-To-Actions

Verbal call-to-actions are nice, but visual call-to-actions are even better. You can only ask your viewers to do a task so many times before you start to sound like a desperate, broken record. However, graphics can be used much more frequently without repercussion.

Create some transparent .png files to add to your live video. Common phrases for these .png files include:

  • Subscribe/Follow Now!
  • Catch me every Wednesday at 2pm!
  • Share this video with a friend!
  • Follow me @TheAngieChu!

These graphics can be left on the screen for long lengths of time, or even for the entire stream. Some producers stack the graphics, so that two or three graphics are on the screen at once as a border of sorts. With these call-to-actions staring viewers in the face for so long, they are much more likely to grab their phone or computer and obey your request before you even go off-air.

Promotion After The Broadcast

Share Link/Clip To Social Media

You already advertised that you were live when your broadcast began. Now, it’s time to advertise that your followers can still view your stream on-demand. Load up your trusted Hootsuite account once more, and type something like the following: 

“Want to learn more about [2-3 main topics]? Tune in to the latest episode of [show’s name] to learn the latest developments: [link].”

Post this to all of your social media channels once more. This drives traffic to your video post-broadcast and leads to audience growth prior to your next live video.

Take some time to segment a few 15-30 second clips from your broadcast as well, ideally some of the highlights or some of the most entertaining moments. Post these to social media throughout the week with a tagline such as:

“There’s more content like this available online. Check out the full stream at: [link].”

These teaser clips will entice your followers to check out more of the action on the full-length broadcast, also netting you another audience member.

Fill Your Page/Group With Followers

The more followers you have, the more people that have an opportunity to see your social media promotions. Some social media platforms are easier to grow than others.

For Facebook Pages, there is an option for Admins to invite all of their personal friends to “like” the Page. This often leads to an explosion of hundreds of new followers within 24-48 hours. Have all Admins of the Page invite their friends to like the Page. You can also ask viewers during the broadcast to invite their friends to like your Page as well.

For Twitter and Instagram accounts, post the link to your most recent video as the link in your bio. Take some time each day to search through hashtags relevant to your video. Like and comment on some of those other Tweets and posts. This encourages their authors to look at your account. Since they are interested in similar content, their views lead to an increased audience on your account, and–by proxy–an increased audience for your videos.

Arrange Crosspromotion

An easy way to grow your audience is to help another streamer’s audience grow as well. Reach out to a fellow streamer prior to your next broadcast and ask to feature them on your stream. The feature can be done in a number of ways:

  • Conduct an interview with them on your next stream in one of the following methods:
    • Live in your studio with you
    • Remotely via video conferencing software
    • Pre-recorded interview either in-studio or remotely
  • Take a clip from one of their best videos and feature it on your stream. Describe what makes the clip so great.

Make sure to tag your guest’s handle in your video’s description. This will push it out to their own feed. Most guests will also share/retweet your content in return with a “Check me out” notification, giving you even more of an audience reach.

Where Has Lil Tay Gone, And Why Do I Care So Much?

I’ll admit it: “Cash Me Ousside” was funny for the first two weeks of its memehood. People made all sorts of holiday-themed poems in honour of Danielle Bregoli, the foul-mouthed, 13-year-old brat from a recent episode of the Dr. Phil show.

As someone who doesn’t agree with spanking children, I felt that Danielle Bregoli needed several spankings to knock her loose of her high horse, and I loved watching her throw a tantrum at the end of the episode when she was forced to go to a behavioural camp.

Roses are red. Emos are black. Cash me ousside. Howbow dah?

But then: tragedy struck. As a now-famous Danielle continued to steal cars, do drugs, and get kicked off airplanes for fighting, someone decided to give her a record deal. And thus, “Bhad Bhabie” was born and became a millionaire for her terrible behaviour.

The act left a sour taste in my mouth. Many people blamed the spread of the memes for Danielle’s success; however, many people are featured in memes every year. Few of these people are ever rewarded. The rise of Bhad Bhabie was not the meme’s fault. It was the fault of a record executive in an office somewhere.

I avoided any Bhad Bhabie products and videos for the next year to avoid giving her any sort of support. Views equal money. Sales equal money. I didn’t want to give Danielle Bregoli any money. I wanted her to go to rehab and re-enroll in school. Then, in February 2018, TMZ posted an article and a video of Bhad Bhabie fighting another girl named “Woah Vicky” at a Mall.

Woah Vicky makes Bhad Bhabie look like a saint. She talks in an almost incoherent mumble, which she claims is cause she’s from the streets. People from the streets don’t talk like that, Vicky. They have their own dialect, but they still sound intelligent. Vicky also claims to be black, and a proud member of the African American community. Vicky needs glasses.

But as I watched Trash and Trashier spar on TMZ’s video, I noticed another challenger enter the arena. It was a small, Asian girl with blonde hair and a foul mouth who appeared to be glued to Woah Vicky’s hip throughout the altercation. Once the majority of the commotion was finished, the little girl began screaming in support of Woah Vicky and swearing at Bhad Bhabie and her fans. Overall, she seemed very out of place, and I was very confused.

What was a child doing in this hullabaloo??

This little girl should have been in class, not watching Bhad Bhabie and Woah Vicky commit misdemeanors at a mall meet-n-greet.

That little girl turned out to be Lil Tay, the world’s youngest flexer. She may be only nine-years-old, but she has clothes that cost more than your momma’s rent! How do I know? Well, she has said so numerous times in her videos.

Lil Tay was everything that I’d come to despise from Bhad Bhabie, Woah Vicky, and their crew of faux-street Internet rappers, yet something drew me closer to her. Whereas I could barely get through more than two Bhad Bhabie or Woah Vicky videos, I found myself entranced at Lil Tay’s Instagram page. I watched video after video, until there were no more. Then, I went to her YouTube channel, and I watched some more. There was something different about this pipsqueak, and I was intrigued to learn more.

Lil Tay’s videos were simple, yet entertaining. She’d loudly introduce herself, show off her latest car to visit Beaver Creek or house, remind us that she’s only 9-years-old yet her belongings cost more than your momma’s rent, and make it rain dollar bills for the camera. Profanity was often featured in Lil Tay’s videos, and sometimes I couldn’t help but wonder if she was another Andy Milonakis-esque adult, suffering from a growth-hormone deficiency that made her appear as a child. But no, Lil Tay was actually a child. A “flexer”. A source of controversy.

Stacks on stacks on stacks on stacks on stacks on stacks on…

Lil Tay was received differently than her counterparts, primarily due to her age and her content. None of Lil Tay’s videos featured illegal or harmful acts; they were simply vlogs of a young girl with a foul mouth and stacks of cash. Instead of comments that she should be in jail or calling her a slut, people were either amused by Lil Tay or wondering where her parents were while she was producing these videos.

It turns out, they were close by. Lil Tay’s mother, Angela Tian, was a leading realtor from Vancouver, Canada. All of the designer homes in which Lil Tay shot her videos were actually those of Angela Tian’s clients, people looking to sell their homes. The fancy cars in the videos were clients’ cars parked in their garages.

One of Angela Tian’s clients–who ironically watched the Lil Tay videos routinely–soon noticed their home on display in one of the videos. Not wanting to be associated with a foul-mouthed pipsqueak, the client squealed to Tian’s boss, and Tian was subsequently let go from her company.

Hopefully, Lil Tay can flex enough to pay her own momma’s rent now…

The Internet exploded. Lil Tay was a fake?? She didn’t really purchase her own electronics that cost more than your momma’s rent at 9-years-old?? Oh. Em. Gee.

The media published story after story about Angela Tian’s firing and the true nature of the Lil Tay videos. Morning outlets like Good Morning, America invited the Tians as guests. Despite being exposed as a “poser”, Lil Tay’s star was rising higher than that of her counterparts.

A new video was leaked, which featured Lil Tay sitting before a green screen and playing with her phone with a bored expression on her face. Behind the camera was a teenaged male’s voice, one that was later to be her 16-year-old brother’s, Jason Tian. Jason hyperactively gave Tay suggestions on what to say, while she looked on with annoyance. At one point, their mother interrupts, and Tay complains that she was filming.

Tay clearly is not amused at her family’s antics. She wants to go out and flex in those houses, not sit in front of a green screen making promos.

With Jason exposed as the mastermind behind the character of “Lil Tay”, I expected the little girl to crash and burn; yet, she continued gaining more followers, appearing on more shows, and producing more videos. How?

What separates Lil Tay from the rest of her pack is that…Lil Tay actually has talent. She took Jason’s poorly-fed lines and ideas and delivered them with such a powerful energy that it sucked in her viewers. She wasn’t sitting on a balcony with a grille in her mouth and a lit joint spouting off about “N-word this, and n-word that”. She was delivering actual monologues, and she was delivering them well.

Once Lil Tay was busted and began her media tour, her Instagram Stories began to show behind-the-scenes footage. One such Instagram Story featured news anchor Julie Chen. A bubbly, calm, and articulate Lil Tay asked Chen a few questions, then turned to the camera and announced that she was ready. As soon as the cameraman (presumably Jason) said that it was rolling, Lil Tay instantly transformed into her role, announcing that she was here “flexing with Juju” and making it rain dollar bills from her puffy jacket pocket. When the monologue was complete, Lil Tay paused and giggled at Chen, proud of her performance.

The GMA interview was hard to watch. Lil Tay tried so hard to keep up her image, although the evidence and questions against her were damning.

Unfortunately, Lil Tay’s media tour also irreparably damaged her social media career. She experienced what I call “the Jackass effect”.

Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, and crew from the hit Jackass series have frequently mentioned that filming the Jackass television show and the first movie were a lot easier and a lot more effective. Why? No one knew who any of the actors were. They were just ordinary guys doing unordinary things and garnering reactions.

By the time the second Jackass movie rolled around, many stunts were ruined by people spotting and recognizing the cast. The reactions were no longer genuine, and the guys began to focus more on pranking each other than pranking the public.

In a similar fashion, people began to recognize Lil Tay while she and her family were out on shoots. Someone would yell, “Hey, it’s Lil Tay!” from the window. People would wander into the background and wave. Many passersby would antagonize the entire Tian family, upsetting Tay greatly and ruining the shoot.

So many of these videos popped up on social media, of people catching the Tian crowd out in public.

Lil Tay quickly realized that her act was up. A talented ballerina, she also longed to show off her actual talents instead of simply her monologues. By early June, Lil Tay deleted all of her videos from Instagram and YouTube, promising a comeback within a few weeks with “all new material”. The Internet–myself included–began to wonder what was coming our way.

And then…as quickly as she’d gone silent…she was back. On June 18th, 2018, troubled rapper XXXTentacion was shot and killed at a motorcycle dealership in Miami, Florida. Lil Tay flooded her Instagram page with tributes to the slain rapper, including screenshots of their conversations together and recordings of their video chats. The heavily-advertised charity event that XXXTentacion had been promoting for the following weekend was to be a surprise joint-effort with Lil Tay, something she confirmed via her screenshots.

Lil Tay posted a tearful video mourning the rapper, in which she repeatedly said that he was “like a father” to her. And this is where my realization that all was not well in Lil Tay’s life hit the roof.

For those unaware, XXXTentacion racked up a long list of crimes and atrocities in his short 20 years of life, beginning with a stint in juvie at age 12. He was perhaps most known for beating his pregnant girlfriend, Geneva Ayala, nearly to death in 2017. More on him can be found here.

If there was anyone acting as a “father-figure” in Lil Tay’s life, it shouldn’t have been a mostly-unapologetic abuser.

On top of this, Jason’s Tweets were beginning to seem hostile and manic, and Woah Vicky posted a video of her talking in a mostly normal voice, exposing Jason as a controlling mastermind. From her interviews, Angela Tian seemed constantly aloof. It became clear that Lil Tay was not getting the support or the upbringing that she needed at her age.

And I think that’s one of the most troubling things of all. It’s not a little girl using vulgarity or throwing money around on a camera. It’s that a little girl is seemingly either all alone, or surrounded by negative influences (her brother, XXXTentacion, Bhad Bhabie, Woah Vicky). It’s the cryptic Stories she’ll occasionally post on her Instagram for a matter of hours that say, “Help.” It’s her failed reality television show on an unknown network.

I worry about Lil Tay because she’s not a “thuggin’ bad girl” like her allies and rivals. She is legitimately a little girl who started out making videos for fun with her brother, and now has been thrust into the harsh world of Internet bullying and criticism. Lil Tay does need a remarkable comeback, and she’s only going to get one chance to do it.

Play Pokémon (And Other GBA/GBC Games) On Your iPhone!

**Note: I am an iPhone user, so this guide will cover how to install this emulator on iOS devices. There is a way to do this on Android devices as well, but I don’t know that process. Sorry!**

If you’re like me, and most people born between 1985-1995, you grew up with a love of Pokémon. The Pokémon games were a huge part of my childhood, to the extent that I had two Game Boy Advances (thanks, Mom and Dad!), a link cable, and both games in each Gen to trade Pokémon back-and-forth with myself.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve installed emulators like Visual Boy Advance onto my computers for a fun Pokémon pick-me-up when needed, so that I don’t have to dig through my mother’s house to find my old systems (and a slew of AA batteries). But what about when I’m on the go?

No, this isn’t my screenshot. I always name my Pokémon actual names. But I have to give it to whoever decided to use a bird named “Pimp Seal” to kill a Rayquaza.

On many a roadtrip, I find myself wishing that I’d brought my 3DS with me so that I could quickly indulge in one of the many beloved Pokémon regions that have stolen my heart since 1999. “Why can’t Nintendo just port to the phone?!” I whine. I’d gladly pay for a copy of a Pokémon RPG, but none are available.

Therefore, other tactics are thankfully available.

Keep in mind that this guide is accurate as of July 30th, 2018. If you are reading this somewhere down the line and these tactics no longer work, I apologize!

Today, boys and girls, we will be installing the GBA4iOS emulator. It can be installed onto iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches running on the iOS 11 operating system. No jailbreaking is required, and all past GBA titles are allowed. The installation process is simple and easy, and I have outlined it below for your gaming pleasure:

  1. Open your iOS browser. I use the Google Chrome app, but the Safari app works as well!
  2. Type in http://iemulators.com/gba4ios.
  3. Scroll down, and select the most recent release. As of this penning, it is “GBA4iOS 2.1”.
  4. Confirm and install. The GBA4iOS app will be installed onto the home screen of your iOS device.
  5. Open the grey “Settings” app for your iOS device from your home screen.
  6. Select “General”.
  7. Scroll down and select “Device Management”.
  8. Tap on “China Television Information Technology”.
  9. Verify the app.
  10. You’re all set!

To download games, I recommend going to the romsmania.com website on your iOS browser. Search for the title that you want, and select “Download”. When it runs, either tap on “Open in GBA4iOS”, or tap on “More…” if the GBA option doesn’t show yet. If you’ve tapped “More…”, scroll until you see GBA4iOS as an option 🙂

So Ya Wanna Make Indie Films?

Many people dream of making an indie film. Whether it is a small project just for fun with friends, or done with the intentions of getting recognized by Hollywood execs and living happily ever after in the Hills…there are a few standard practices to follow to ensure the success of your film.

I am no expert. With a few indie films under my belt, most of the tips below are results of my failures in filmmaking. Saying that, don’t go into your first film expecting to produce the best cinematic feature ever to grace the Earth. Likewise, don’t give up because of your failures, and instead use them as stepping stones to grow on. I have learned far more from my failures than my successes, and so will you!

So let’s get started 🙂

As you write, keep in mind your budget, skill needed, and locations. I once wrote a scene that needed to take place in an old morgue. It was ambitious, but as a no-budget film, I didn’t have the money to buy a filming permit and use a morgue for a day. So I had to switch it to a dark alley mid-shoot and adjust all dialogue afterwards. As you’re writing and come upon a setting, think to yourself, “Where can this be filmed?” It’ll save you a headache later on!

Keep in mind what actors you need. Films are a lot harder to do now than they were for me 5 years ago. Back when I was just starting out, half of my acting pool was unemployed, and the other half worked part time jobs. Now, all of my actors have full time jobs, so it can be hard to accommodate schedules. More than once, I’ve had to drop a cast member because they literally had no time to film. Even with people working M-F, most people don’t want to sacrifice every Saturday/Sunday for months to shoot. Try to keep your number of main characters down to a minimum, and cast people in these roles that have similar schedules and LOVE the script (so they’re excited and committed). Minor characters are easier to work in, since they’re needed for 1-2 days.

Just like with settings, when a prop is needed in a movie, think to yourself, “Where can I get this?” One of my first movies would have needed $2000 in props. We would up having to find last minute substitutions for these props because no one had that sort of money. The changes made the film cringy in spots, so this was not a good change for production value.

While filming, always film extra footage, even if you don’t think you need it. Film b-roll. Film extra takes. Film filler scenes. If two actors ad-lib well with one another, let them keep going as long as they stay in character (or bring something extra to their characters). One of my favourite scenes was from my 2016 film Ebony’s Revenge. In it, the four actors were all great at improv and reacted well to one another. What was supposed to be a 3-4 minute scene in the movie turned in 50 minutes of footage and 12 minutes total in the finished film. Almost unanimously, everyone agrees that is THE best scene in the movie, and it helped to up the total runtime to a full 90 minutes

Lastly, HAVE FUN! The movies I’ve made where the actors were relaxed and enjoying themselves are the ones people have given the most positive reactions. The ones where the actors were bored or didn’t really care for the script…it showed in the finished product, and the film fell flat. Those are the movies that I don’t promote. Make sure you’ve got a good cast of people who want to have a good time! This helps with filming on weekends, too. If it’s a bunch of friends hanging out and goofing around on camera, then they are far more likely to have no qualms about filming for 6 weeks
